Heavenly Mirth
A serious event ended with a laugh. A subject we coy males rarely discuss is our own health - especially in certain parts of the body. Yet ignorance can kill. A meeting in the Commons drew attention to the problems of prostate cancer. The gimmick that attracted us was an invitation to design our own boxer shorts. Mine were decorated with the names of other MPs. It was all a bit tricky. Certain names were strategically place near parts of the anatomy that had unfortunate double meanings. “Was I really making a point by putting Peter Mandelson's name THERE ?”, I was asked by a radio reporter. Unselfishly I denied any responsibility and delegated the credit for the embarrassing design to my researcher. The event was hosted by Peter Bentine, the son of comical genius Michael Bentine who died of this treatable disease. “ My father” Peter said “was always open about his illness. That added years to his life.” Proving that humour is inherited, Peter concluded “ I know that my father up in Heaven will have a good laugh today, knowing that his son came to the House of Commons to talk about bollocks.”
